Configuring Open Transport for Macintosh

Two programs are needed to run Open Transport on the Macintosh: Open Transport 1.1.2 and OT/PPP 1.0. Install both programs with the extensions off (start the computer and hold down the shift key), and then restart the computer with the extensions on (restart without pressing any key).

Step 1: Open TCP/IP in the control panels folder. In the pulldown menu next to "Connect via" select PPP. If PPP is not a possible selection, check if PPP has been installed in the extension folder.

Step 2: In the pulldown menu next to "Configure" select Using PPP Server.

Step 3: In the box next to "Name server addr." enter the following IP numbers:

    64.6.12.49
    64.6.15.17
If there is a box asking for the "Domain name" enter HCIL.net.

Step 4: Close window by clicking in the box at the upper left corner. If asked if you want to save changes, click OK.

Step 5: In the Control Panels folder select PPP (or PPPot). The space next to "Connect via" should say "modem."

Step 6: Under "Connection" select Registered User.

  • Next to "Name" enter your login name.
  • Next to "Password" enter your password.
  • Click in the box next to "Save Password."
  • In the blank next to "Number" enter 924-1020.

Step 7: Click on the "Options" button at the bottom of the box.

  • In the blank next to "Redialing" enter the number of times you want the modem to retry if it gets a busy signal.
  • In the box next to "Time between retries" enter 20 seconds.

Step 8: Select the Connection popup tab.

  • In the box next to "Disconnect if Idle for __ minutes" enter 20 minutes. If you forget to disconnect, this option will allow the computer do so and free up the phone line.

Step 9: Choose the popup tab for Protocal.

  • Select "Allow error correction and compression in modem." This option allows the modem to receive data more quickly because it has been compressed. It also corrects some transmission errors caused by poor phone lines.
  • Select "Use TCP/IP header compression."
  • Close box when finished.

Step 10: From within the Control Panels folder select Modem. If your modem is connected to the modem port, select "Modem port" from the pulldown menu.

  • Select you modem type from the list provided in the pulldown menu. If you modem is not on the list, select "Hayes Compatible."
  • Click OK and then restart your computer.

To connect using Open Transport, go to the PPP control panel and select "Connect."
